General Medicine

The Department of Medicine came into existence in 1964. With modest beginnings, it was housed in the old DMC campus with two medical units and an office finding a place in the verandah. The earliest faculty included Dr. B.N. Soor, Dr. Narinder Arora (on deputation for six months from Amritsar) and Dr. Harjit Singh (on deputation for three months from Patiala). Dr.B.K. Ahuja took over as the first formal full time Head of the Medicine department in1965. Pediatrics was also a part of Medicine at that time.

Dr. S.B. Khurana was the next faculty member to join the department of Medicine in 1967 and Dr. L.S. Chawla joined in the year 1971. The department gradually extended to three medical units in the year 1978. Post graduation in Medicine was started in 1977 with two candidates every year. Presently ten post graduate students join the department every year and as many as …..have obtained their MD (Medicine) degree from this institution.

Dr. L. S. Chawla became the Head of department in 1974. Many speciality services were introduced with every passing year. Nephrology services were initiated in 1976 under the charge of Dr. G. L. Avasthi.

EEG and Neurology services were started in 1983 along with Gastro Endoscopy. Oncology services were introduced in the year 1986. The department introduced Cardiology services with Tread Mill Test in 1988. Echocardiography was introduced in 1991. The vision of Dr. L. S. Chawla (who became Principal in 1986) and Dr. S. B. Khurana (who was the

Medical Superintendent from 1978 to 1994 and then Principal from 1994 to 1998) took the department to new heights. Dr. G.L. Avasthi took over the charge as Head of the Department in 1998 from Dr. S. B. Khurana. The 4th unit of Medicine was added in the year 2000.

Academics have always been in the fore front of the departmental priorities and the faculty has contributed to numerous chapters in Books and …… Publications in National and International Journals.
